Over the Moon with Barbara Doran

Barbara Doran, Brad Battle and Tamara Maddalen (New Moon Junction)

New Moon Junction is the “brain child” of Barbara (Barb) Doran. The country music trio is also comprised of “the amazingly talented” Tamara Maddalen and Brad Battle.

They are nominated for The Country Music Association of Ontario Awards for Group or Duo of the Year. The 12th Annual CMAOntario Awards are taking place on Sunday, June 2 at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. According to Barb, they are “over the moon to be nominated amongst some of Canada's top talent, it is a real honour.”

“Summer is our busiest time of year for gigs and we look forward to that. We are also looking forward to performing during The CMAOntario weekend at The Tailgate Party in Celebration Square on June 1.”

In addition to the awards, New Moon Junction can also be found at The CNE this summer. “The CNE is always a blast, great venue, crew, and crowd.  We are excited to be back there this year for our third year in a row.” Barb added, “We really enjoy seeing the familiar faces in the audience during our Ontario shows but also like to meet and engage with new fans as well.”

Initially, Barb said that she never really thought about becoming part of the entertainment industry. “I just naturally gravitated towards performing, singing and song-writing.  I feel that we don't choose music, it chooses us…. You need to love it and have a thick skin.  You have to give it everything you've got. Ride the highs with humility and the lows with grace. Never give up.”

After a successful solo career, she was “looking to go in a new direction” which brought her to Brad and Tamara. As a group, they have been compared to Lady A, Little Big Town and Fleetwood Mac which are bands that they also love.

“[We] have been working at our craft for a long time, we put a lot of thought, passion and love into our music and we work really hard… but still know how to have fun too.  Each of us has a very distinct sound that just happens to blend really well harmonically.”

New Moon Junction’s distinctive sound can be heard on their latest single, “Mind of its Own”. As Barb Doran explained, “The song is very relatable because sometimes we make decisions that we know aren't good for us but we do it anyway and that is okay. That is life.  Hopefully we learn and grow from our mistakes.”
